Analyze

While there are many resources for learning food protection procedures, applying these procedures in the moment can be a challenge. In the preparation phase, I interviewed subject matter experts (SMEs), including a chef, deli manager, and restaurant owner. In those conversations, my SMEs shared some of the most common food safety errors they have encountered in their years of experience as well as some of the issues they’d been cited for during health inspections. They noted that their new employees have completed food safety trainings but often still have difficulty applying the information they learned in realistic scenarios. After finishing the needs analysis, I began the iterative design process.

Design

The Action Map Model

Using Cathy Moore’s Map It: The Hands-on Guide to Strategic Training Design to guide my process, I defined the performance problem and identified high-priority actions. This module focuses on five of the high-priority actions listed in the action map. Additional training solutions will address the other high-level actions needed to improve the performance problem.

The Text-Based Storyboard

My educational background equipped me with strong writing skills, and my conversations with SMEs helped me write realistic scenarios based on interactions that can occur daily within a kitchen.

Visual Mockups

After writing the text-based storyboard, I used Adobe XD and Adobe Illustrator to create visual mockups of key slides. I used FreePik to source vector images that served as the basis for my characters and backgrounds. I imported these images into Adobe XD to create visual prototypes depicting how my key slides would appear in Adobe XD. Within Adobe XD, it was easy to iterate on slide design and make changes to scale, visual hierarchy, balance, and contrast.

Visual Storyboard

Once I had finalized the design of my key slides, I created a visual storyboard that included on-screen text, animation notes, and on-screen graphics.

Interactive Prototype

Next, I created an interactive prototype to test the functionality of my design.

Develop

After gathering feedback on my prototype, I moved the project into full development. I relied on my visual storyboard and prototype to develop the project.
